In a dramatic escalation of tensions, Iran has cast doubt on its participation in upcoming nuclear talks with the United States, following a series of Israeli airstrikes that have targeted critical Iranian military and nuclear assets. The airstrikes, which commenced on Friday, specifically aimed at high-ranking military commanders and officials pivotal to Iran’s nuclear program, have left at least one key figure deceased: Ali Shamkhani, former secretary of the Supreme National Council, who was leading Iran's delegation in negotiations.
On Saturday, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baghaei, stated the nation is undecided about its involvement in the scheduled sixth round of negotiations set for Sunday in Muscat, Oman. "It is still unclear what decision we will make for Sunday,” Baghaei commented, amidst raised accusations against Washington for enabling the Israeli military actions. The Iranian state media reported an official suspension of participation in the talks "until further notice" due to the unexpected military aggression from Israel.
Baghaei’s remarks reflect a broader suspicion concerning U.S. intentions amid escalating conflict, alleging that American oversight contributed to the recent airstrikes targeted towards Iran's diplomatic efforts. Describing the attacks as part of a concerted strategy to undermine negotiations, he implied that Israel operates with tacit approval from Washington, labeling it “adventurous aggression.”
The U.S., however, has denied direct involvement in the strikes while urging Iran to remain engaged in dialogue to prevent further conflict. Senior State Department officials, including McCoy Pitt, have emphasized the importance of negotiations to mitigate tensions. President Trump has echoed these sentiments through social media, threatening intensified attacks on Iran if a deal is not reached, reinforcing the precarious nature of the current diplomatic landscape.
