Katy Perry Set to Join Historic All-Women Space Flight with Blue Origin
Pop superstar Katy Perry will embark on a groundbreaking journey into space alongside a distinguished group of women this spring.
Pop sensation Katy Perry is gearing up for an extraordinary adventure into space, slated to take place this spring aboard Blue Origin's New Shepherd rocket. The upcoming flight, notable for being the first all-women crew since Valentina Tereshkova's historic mission in 1963, will also feature prominent figures such as Lauren Sanchez, fiancé of Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos; CBS anchor Gayle King; former Nasa rocket scientist Aisha Bowe; civil rights advocate Amanda Nguyen; and film producer Kerianne Flynn.
While an exact launch date remains undisclosed, Blue Origin has confirmed the mission will occur before Perry's Lifetimes Tour, which runs from April 23 to November 11. Expressing her excitement, Perry remarked, "If you had told me I'd be part of the first all-female crew in space, I would have believed you. Nothing was beyond my imagination as a child."
This historic NS-31 mission will be the New Shepherd rocket's 11th human spaceflight and the 31st overall in its program, which has successfully taken 52 people into space thus far. The adventure is anticipated to last approximately 11 minutes, propelling passengers beyond the Karman line, recognized as the boundary of outer space.
Blue Origin has attributed the successful formation of this mission to Lauren Sanchez, highlighting her leadership in paving the way for women in the field. Sanchez first shared her vision of an all-women flight during a Vogue interview in 2023, emphasizing the mission's goal to inspire future generations.
This initiative adds to the growing trend of celebrity space tourism, following notable flights that have included Jeff Bezos, Michael Strahan, and William Shatner. Not to be outdone, Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson has also participated in space explorations. Meanwhile, SpaceX's Elon Musk has yet to make a personal voyage into the cosmos.
With this all-women flight, Blue Origin aims to not only celebrate female pioneers in space but also spark broader discussions about women’s representation in science and technology.
