PARIS — French President Emmanuel Macron showcased his accessibility to President Donald Trump during the UN General Assembly in New York this week. After delivering a speech, he encountered a roadblock caused by a police motorcade.
Amidst the congestion, Macron pulled out his phone and dialed Trump: How are you? Guess what? I’m waiting in the street because everything is frozen for you! This light-hearted moment caught the attention of French journalists who noted that Trump was indeed on the line, as confirmed by a French official.
Macron explained to the officers that he was attempting to reach France's diplomatic mission after announcing during his speech that France recognized Palestinian statehood.
Trying to negotiate passage, he said, I have 10 people with me, but received a polite refusal from the police: I’m really sorry, President, it’s just that everything’s frozen right now. Macron, undeterred, continued his conversation with Trump, expressing a desire to discuss the Gaza situation and coordinate efforts over the weekend.
French media reported that shortly after the call, the street reopened, allowing Macron to proceed on foot to his destination.
The announcement of recognition of Palestinian statehood marked a significant diplomatic gesture, aimed at revitalizing the Israeli-Palestinian peace process during the high-profile UN meeting.
