Ukraine Accused as Russia Arrests Suspected Assassin of General in Moscow Bombing
Russian security forces claim to have captured a Ukrainian spy responsible for the assassination of a senior general in a car bomb explosion in a Moscow suburb.
Russian security forces announced the arrest of a suspect they claim is linked to a deadly car bomb attack that resulted in the assassination of General Yaroslav Moskalik, a senior official within the military's General Staff. The FSB, Russia's secret service, identified the detained individual as "Ukrainian special services agent Ignat Kuzi," alleging that he planted explosives in a Volkswagen Golf that fatally injured the general as he passed his car in the suburb of Balashikha.
According to the FSB, the homemade explosive device was remotely detonated from Ukraine, intensifying tensions amid the ongoing conflict. The agency suggested that Kuzi was recruited by Ukrainian operatives in 2023 and entered Moscow in September. In a controversial move, Russian media aired footage purportedly showing the suspect confessing to his involvement, alongside clips from the arrest and images of the bomb's components.
The Kremlin wasted no time in attributing responsibility to Ukraine for the bombing, asserting that Kyiv's actions reflected a broader pattern of terrorism directed at Russian interests. General Moskalik had previously participated in diplomatic efforts with Ukraine in 2015, contributing to the Minsk agreements aimed at curtailing the violence in the Donbas region, which reignited following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
