In a shocking revelation, recently published research indicates that nearly four million common murres have perished in the waters surrounding Alaska due to devastating effects from a marine heatwave known as "the Blob." This domino effect, stemming from widespread changes to the ecosystem, has left the population of these sleek black-and-white seabirds critically diminished and shows no signs of recovery.

Initially detected through a surge of emaciated murre bodies washing ashore from California to Alaska during 2015 and 2016, authorities recorded approximately 62,000 dead birds during that time. Since then, biologists and researchers have sought to understand the underlying causes of this cataclysmic event.

With publication in the journal Science, the findings disclose that Alaska's common murres, which represent about a quarter of the global population, experienced an unprecedented die-off due to the exceptionally warm water temperatures that characterized the heatwave. Heather Renner, a supervisory wildlife biologist at the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge and co-author of the study, stated, “What we learned was that it was just way worse than we thought.”

The cause of mortality for the murres can be traced back to significant ecological changes impacting the marine food chain—a critical reliance on specific fish species that serve as their primary food source. This decline in vital marine life due to the heatwave has reverberated throughout the ecosystem, leading to cascading failures in food availability for not just murres, but also other marine creatures from small plankton to large humpback whales.
