ORLANDO, Fla. (RTW News) — A federal judge in Florida has determined that Jonathan Rinderknecht, the suspect linked to the devastating Palisades Fire in California, will continue to be held in custody following serious concerns regarding his mental health and risk of fleeing. These revelations came during a court hearing in Orlando where Assistant U.S. Attorney Rachel Lyons highlighted Rinderknecht’s potential as a flight risk due to connections to family in France and his troubled mental state.

Rinderknecht is accused of starting a fire on January 1, which remained undetected underground and subsequently reignited, devastating coastal areas and leading to a significant loss of life and property. Prosecutors assert that the inferno left 12 dead and over 17,000 homes destroyed in Los Angeles County.

During the court session, it was noted that Rinderknecht had previously threatened his family members, prompting their fear and evictions. Testimonies revealed his recent behavior included alarming statements about possessing a firearm for self-defense and a growing sense of despondency. Assistant Federal Defender Aziza Hawthorne argued for his release, maintaining that he posed no threat, yet the court remained concerned upon hearing of his family’s fears.

Investigators initially focused on Rinderknecht after extensive interviews and over 200 leads related to the fire. They established that the fire began underground, smoldering unnoticed before it escalated into a blaze affecting Pacific Palisades and Malibu. In total, more than 30 people perished in the combined fires of that day.

As the case continues to develop, Rinderknecht is set to remain incarcerated until he appears again in court on October 17, where prosecutors will present further evidence against him.
